LOCATION AND HISTORY OF CLUB

Site of historic Monduran Station and Gin Gin Station, it is now known as ?Wild
Scotchman Country?, after Queensland?s only authentic bushranger, James Aplin
McPherson, who signed himself thus, and is reputed to have been captured at
Monduran Station.
Mostly agricultural, the area boasts many orchards, vineyards and sugar cane
farms, and is a mecca for tourists, with a variety of attractions. These
include Fred Haigh Dam, which holds Lake Monduran, a great spot for picnics,
bushwalks, and fishing for Bass & Barramundi; Wonbah Winery; historic and
heritage listed Boolboonda Tunnel, Jinjinburra Aboriginal Artefacts Centre and
school; Mt Perry Mine, Gin Gin Historical Museum; and Goodnight Scrub
National Park.
With modern motels, hotels, caravan parks and camping sites, Gin Gin is often
described as ?halfway to everywhere?, and deserves being made a tourist
destination, rather than a transit point. Visitors from all over the world come
to visit, and almost all stay longer than planned, because there is so much to
see and do.
The Lions Club of Gin Gin was formed on 5th March 1968, at a meeting under the auspices of the Sponsor Club, Lions Club of Bundaberg. Charter Executive members were -President
Edward Vincent McDonnell - 1st VP Cyril Robert Manderson - 2nd VP Ian Bruce
Gillies - 3rd VP Roy Douglas Robb - Secretary Peter William Pollock ?
Treasurer Peter William King - Tail Twister John Keith Oliver - Lion Tamer
Arthur James Braund. There were fifteen other members.
The main project for that inaugural year was provision of facilities for the local Kindergarten. Each year thereafter a ?main project? has been chosen, usually completed within the year. Two exceptions to this were the Pensioner Units (now renamed Centenary Seniors Village), and the Ambulance Station. Both these projects were carried over until completed. Some of the other projects over the 33 years of the existence of the club have been:
* Erection of the Town Clock, and subsequent maintenance/refurbishment
* Tables, seats and a Barbecue on the main street median strip for the comfort and use of travellers,
* Erection of an ?adventure fort? at the Kindergarten
* Provision of an electric wheelchair for use by severely disabled residents
* Provision of an electrically adjustable bed for the local Hospital
* Erection of a shade & relaxation rotunda at the Hospital
* Installation of Rose Gardens in the main street median strip
* Purchase of ?Jaws of Life?? for the local Fire Brigade
* Current project:- installation of medi-alert signal units in all 16 residences in the Centenary Seniors Village
We may be few in number, but we are proud of the fact that each year we manage to raise (and give back to the local community in one form or another) between $5,000 and $10,000.
IN APPRECIATION
Lionswap
the ISP provider for Lions Web Sites has been set-up by the Lions of Turkey
(MD118). Work on the programmes/script used to compile Web Pages has been the
work of Dr. Enzar Tore of the Canakkale Lions, also of Turkey. The Lions Club
of Gin Gin consequently displays the national flag of TURKEY on their site as
a sign of appreciation of their work/efforts.
Continuing Activities of the Club.
Apart from the 100 Club, we also run a Friday night and Saturday lunchtime meat tray raffle at the Highway Hotel. This venue and the facilities are shared with the local football club, each group using them for 6 months at a time. We are also involved in Charity Golf Days and Bowls Days, provide a barbecue at most outdoor public functions and run the bar at most of the indoor ones, as well as organising the usual Lions Mints and Christmas Cake sales, Miss Personality and Youth of the Year contests etc. etc.
A recent addition to our activities has been support for one of our members, Lyn Henderson, who is an avid quilter. We support her in her project to provide "Cuddle Quilts" (like "Linus Blankets" for those of you who know the 'Peanuts' comic strip) to children who are long-term-treatment & cancer patients. These are a gift to the child, and are something they can keep with them wherever they are. Nurses will verify that such an item can make their time away from home much less traumatic. Each quilt bears the Lions symbol.
